And know ye this day ...; for [supplied: I speak] not with your children who have not known, and who have not seen the chastisement of Jehovah your God, his greatness, his powerful hand, and his stretched-out arm,

Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.

I hear a reproof putting me to shame; and [supplied: my] spirit answereth me by mine understanding.

Seeing thou hast hated correction and hast cast my words behind thee?

My son, despise not the instruction of Jehovah, neither be weary of his chastisement;

and thou say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof!

He shall die for want of discipline; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

Keeping instruction is the path to life; but he that forsaketh reproof goeth astray.

Whoso loveth discipline loveth knowledge, but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

A wise son [supplied: heareth] his father's instruction; but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

Poverty and shame shall be [supplied: to] him that refuseth instruction; but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

A fool despiseth his father's instruction; but he that regardeth reproof becometh prudent.

Grievous correction is for him that forsaketh the path; he that hateth reproof shall die.

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul; but he that heareth reproof getteth sense.

Wisdom is a fountain of life for him that hath it; but the instruction of fools is folly.

Folly is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Withhold not correction from the child; for [supplied: if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:

Jehovah, in trouble they sought thee; they poured out [supplied: their] whispered prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed.

In vain have I smitten your children: they received no correction. Your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

Jehovah, are not thine eyes upon fidelity? Thou hast smitten them, but they are not sore; thou hast consumed them, they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

And thou shalt say unto them, This is the nation which hath not hearkened unto the voice of Jehovah their God, nor received correction; fidelity is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not. For I have smitten thee with the stroke of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the greatness of thine iniquity: thy sins are manifold.
