The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money; yet do they lean upon Jehovah, and say, Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us.

הֲל֤וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Now why dost thou cry out aloud? Is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished, that pangs have seized thee as a woman in travail?

הֲמֶ֣לֶךְ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Wherewith shall I come before Jehovah, bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old?

הַאֲקַדְּמֶ֣נּוּ (הַ) ha. “¿”

Will Jehovah take pleasure in thousands of rams, in ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

הֲיִרְצֶ֤ה (הֲ) ha. “¿”הַאֶתֵּ֤ן (הַ) ha. “¿”

Are there yet treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure [ergänzt: which is] abominable?

הַאִשׁ֙ (הַ) ha. “¿”

Shall I be pure with the unjust balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

הַאֶזְכֶּ֖ה (הַ) ha. “¿”

Art thou better than No-Amon, that was situate among the rivers, [ergänzt: that had] the waters round about her, whose rampart was the sea, [ergänzt: and] of the sea was her wall?

הֲתֵֽיטְבִי֙ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

-- Art thou not from everlasting, Jehovah my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. Jehovah, thou hast ordained him for judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast appointed him for correction.

הֲל֧וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Shall he therefore empty his net, and not spare to slay the nations continually?

הַ֥עַל (הַ֥) Ha. “¿”

Shall not all these take up a proverb about him, and a taunting riddle against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? -- and to him that loadeth himself with pledges!

הֲלוֹא־ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and they awake up that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?

הֲל֣וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Behold, is it not of Jehovah of hosts that the peoples labour for the fire, and the nations weary themselves in vain?

הֲל֣וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Was Jehovah wrathful with the rivers? Was thine anger against the rivers? Was thy rage against the sea, That thou didst ride upon thy horses, Thy chariots of salvation?

הֲבִנְהָרִים֙ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Is it time for you that ye should dwell in your wainscoted houses, while this house lieth waste?

הַעֵ֤ת (הַ) ha. “¿”

Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?

הֲל֥וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any food -- shall it become holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

הֲיִקְדָּ֑שׁ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

And Haggai said, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, is it become unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

הֲיִטְמָ֑א (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree have not brought forth: from this day will I bless [ergänzt: you].

הַע֤וֹד (הַ) ha. “¿”

Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

הַלְעוֹלָ֖ם (הַ) ha “¿”

But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? And they turned and said, Like as Jehovah of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

הֲל֥וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

And Jehovah said unto Satan, Jehovah rebuke thee, O Satan! Yea, Jehovah that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee! Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

הֲל֧וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

And the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these are? And I said, No, my lord.

הֲל֥וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

And he spoke to me, saying, Knowest thou not what these are? And I said, No, my lord.

הֲל֥וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

[ergänzt: and] to speak unto the priests that were in the house of Jehovah of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done now so many years?

הַֽאֶבְכֶּה֙ (הַֽ) ha. “¿”

Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh [ergänzt: month], even those seventy years, did ye really fast unto me, [ergänzt: even] unto me?
