Ephraim, as I saw [ergänzt: him], was a Tyre planted in a beautiful place; but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the slayer.

וְאֶפְרַ֕יִם (וְ) ve. “and”

Give them, Jehovah -- what wilt thou give? -- give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

וְשָׁדַ֖יִם (וְ) ve. “and”

My God hath rejected them, because they hearkened not unto him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

וְיִהְי֥וּ (וְ) ve. “so”

For now they will say, We have no king, for we feared not Jehovah; and a king, what can he do for us?

וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (וְ) ve. “and”

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calf of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the idolatrous priests thereof shall tremble for it, for its glory, because it is departed from it.

וּכְמָרָיו֙ (וּ) u. “and”

Yea, it shall be carried unto Assyria [ergänzt: as] a present for king Jareb: Ephraim shall be seized with shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.

וְיֵב֥וֹשׁ (וְ) ve. “and”

And the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up upon their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us! and to the hills, Fall on us!

וְדַרְדַּ֔ר (וְ) ve. “and”וְלַגְּבָע֖וֹת (וְ) ve. “and”

At my pleasure will I chastise them; and the peoples shall be assembled against them, when they are bound for their two iniquities.

וְאֶסֳּרֵ֑ם (וְ) ve. “and”

And Ephraim is a trained heifer, that loveth to tread out [ergänzt: the corn]; I have passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to draw; Judah shall plough, Jacob shall break his clods.

וְאֶפְרַ֜יִם (וְ) ve. “and”וַאֲנִ֣י (וַ) va. “and”

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek Jehovah, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

וְעֵת֙ (וְ) ve. “and”וְיֹרֶ֥ה (וְ) ve. “and”

And a tumult shall arise among thy peoples, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces with the children.

וְכָל־ (וְ) ve. “and”

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

וּמִמִּצְרַ֖יִם (וּ) u. “and”

As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto the Baals, and burned incense to graven images.

וְלַפְּסִלִ֖ים (וְ) ve. “and”

And I it was that taught Ephraim to walk, -- He took them upon his arms, -- but they knew not that I healed them.

וְאָנֹכִ֤י (וְ) ve. “and”וְלֹ֥א (וְ) ve. “and”

I drew them with bands of a man, with cords of love; and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I gently caused them to eat.

וְאַ֥ט (וְ) ve. “and”

He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king; for they refused to return [ergänzt: to me];

וְאַשּׁ֖וּר (וְ) ve. “and”

Yea, my people are bent upon backsliding from me: though they call them to the Most High, none at all exalteth [ergänzt: him].

וְעַמִּ֥י (וְ) ve. “and”וְאֶל־ (וְ) ve. “and”

I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God, and not man, -- the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not come in anger.

וְלֹא־ (וְ) ve. “and”וְלֹ֥א (וְ) ve. “and”

They shall walk after Jehovah; he shall roar like a lion; when he shall roar, then the children shall hasten from the west:

וְיֶחֶרְד֥וּ (וְ) ve. “and”

they shall hasten as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria; and I will cause them to dwell in their houses, saith Jehovah.

וּכְיוֹנָ֖ה (וּ) u. “and”

Ephraim encompasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah yet walketh with God, and with the holy things of truth.

וּבְמִרְמָ֖ה (וּ) u. “and”וִֽיהוּדָ֗ה (וִֽ) vi. “and”וְעִם־ (וְ) ve. “and”

Ephraim feedeth on wind, and pursueth after the east wind: all day long he multiplieth lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.

וְרֹדֵ֣ף (וְ) ve. “and”וָשֹׁ֖ד (וָ) va. “and”וּבְרִית֙ (וּ) u. “and”וְשֶׁ֖מֶן (וְ) ve. “and”

Jehovah hath also a controversy with Judah, and he will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.

וְרִ֥יב (וְ) ve. “and”וְלִפְקֹ֤ד (וְ) ve. “and”

He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and in his strength he wrestled with God.

וּבְאוֹנ֖וֹ (וּ) u. “and”

Yea, he wrestled with the Angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us,

וְשָׁ֖ם (וְ) ve. “and”
