And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them and plucked off their hair, and adjured them by God [ergänzt: saying], Ye shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

וָאָרִ֤יב (וָ) va. “and”וָאֲקַֽלְלֵ֔ם (וָ) va. “and”וָאַכֶּ֥ה (וָ) va. “and”וָֽאֶמְרְטֵ֑ם (וָֽ) va. “and”וָאַשְׁבִּיעֵ֣ם (וָ) va. “and”

Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among the many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; but even him did foreign wives cause to sin.

וַיִּתְּנֵ֣הוּ (וַ) va “and”

And [ergänzt: one] of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; and I chased him from me.

וָאַבְרִיחֵ֖הוּ (וָ) va. “and”

And I purified them from all foreigners, and appointed the charges of the priests and the Levites, every one in his service;

וְטִֽהַרְתִּ֖ים (וְ) ve. “and”וָאַעֲמִ֧ידָה (וָ) va. “and”

And it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (that is, the Ahasuerus that reigned from India even to Ethiopia, over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces),

וַיְהִ֖י (וַ) va “and”

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the word of the king which was [ergänzt: sent] by the chamberlains; and the king was very wroth, and his fury burned in him.

וַתְּמָאֵ֞ן (וַ) va. “and”וַיִּקְצֹ֤ף (וַ) va “and”

And the king said to the wise men who knew the times (for so was the king's business [ergänzt: conducted] before all that knew law and judgment;

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (וַ) va “and”

Then said Memucan before the king and the princes, The queen Vashti has not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the peoples that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (וַ) va “and”

and when the king's edict which he shall make shall be heard throughout his realm -- for it is great -- all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, from the greatest to the least.

וְנִשְׁמַע֩ (וְ) ve. “and”

And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan.

וַיִּיטַב֙ (וַ) va “and”וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (וַ) va “and”

And he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people according to their language, That every man should bear rule in his own house, and should speak according to the language of his people.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (וַ) va “and”

Then said the king's servants that attended upon him, Let there be maidens, virgins of beautiful countenance, sought for the king;

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ (וַ) va “and”

And let the maiden that pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

וַיִּיטַ֧ב (וַ) va “and”וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (וַ) va “and”

And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter; for she had neither father nor mother -- and the maiden was fair and beautiful -- and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

וַיְהִ֨י (וַ) va “and”

And it came to pass when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the fortress, unto the custody of Hegai, that Esther also was brought into the king's house, unto the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

וַיְהִ֗י (וַ) va “and”וַתִּלָּקַ֤ח (וַ) va. “and”

And the maiden pleased him, and obtained favour before him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, and her portions, and the seven maidens selected to be given her, out of the king's house; and he removed her and her maids to the best [ergänzt: place] of the house of the women.

וַתִּיטַ֨ב (וַ) va. “and”וַתִּשָּׂ֣א (וַ) va. “and”וַ֠יְבַהֵל (וַ֠) Va “and”וַיְשַׁנֶּ֧הָ (וַ) va “and”

In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, unto the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, keeper of the concubines. She came in to the king no more, unless the king delighted in her, and she were called by name.

וְנִקְרְאָ֥ה (וְ) ve. “and”

And when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained grace in the sight of all them that saw her.

וַתְּהִ֤י (וַ) va. “and”

So Esther was taken to king Ahasuerus, into his royal house, in the tenth month, that is, the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

וַתִּלָּקַ֨ח (וַ) va. “and”

And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins, and he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

וַיֶּאֱהַ֨ב (וַ) va “and”וַתִּשָּׂא־ (וַ) va. “and”וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (וַ) va “and”וַיַּמְלִיכֶ֖הָ (וַ) va “and”

And the king made a great feast to all his princes and his servants, Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave presents according to the king's bounty.

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (וַ) va “and”וַיִּתֵּ֥ן (וַ) va “and”

In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the threshold, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.

וַיְבַקְשׁוּ֙ (וַ) va “and”

And the thing became known to Mordecai, and he related it to Esther the queen, and Esther told it to the king in Mordecai's name.

וַיִּוָּדַ֤ע (וַ) va “and”וַיַּגֵּ֖ד (וַ) va “and”וַתֹּ֧אמֶר (וַ) va. “and”

And the matter was investigated and found out; and they were both hanged on a tree. And it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

וַיְבֻקַּ֤שׁ (וַ) va “and”וַיִּמָּצֵ֔א (וַ) va “and”וַיִּתָּל֥וּ (וַ) va “and”וַיִּכָּתֵ֗ב (וַ) va “and”

After these things king Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.

וַֽיְנַשְּׂאֵ֑הוּ (וַֽ) va “and”וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ (וַ) va “and”
