And I went up in the night through the valley, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the valley-gate and returned.

וָאֱהִ֨י (וָ) va. “and”וָאֱהִ֥י (וָ) va. “and”וָאָשׁ֗וּב (וָ) va. “and”וָאָב֛וֹא (וָ) va. “and”וָאָשֽׁוּב׃ (וָ) va. “and”

And I said to them, Ye see the distress that we are in, that Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

וָאוֹמַ֣ר (וָ) va. “and”

And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me; as also of the king's words which he had said unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. And they strengthened their hands for the good [ergänzt: work].

וָאַגִּ֨יד (וָ) va. “and”וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (וַ) va “and”וּבָנִ֔ינוּ (וּ) u. “and”וַיְחַזְּק֥וּ (וַ) va “and”

And Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobijah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it; and they mocked us and despised us, and said, What is this thing which ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

וַיִּשְׁמַע֩ (וַ) va “and”וַיַּלְעִ֣גוּ (וַ) va “and”וַיִּבְז֖וּ (וַ) va “and”וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ (וַ) va “and”

And I answered them, and said to them, The God of the heavens, he will prosper us, and we his servants will arise and build; but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial in Jerusalem.

וָאָשִׁ֨יב (וָ) va. “and”וָאוֹמַ֤ר (וָ) va. “and”וּבָנִ֑ינוּ (וּ) u. “and”

And Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they built the sheep-gate. They hallowed it, and set up its doors; and they hallowed it even to the tower of Meah, to the tower of Hananeel.

וַיָּ֡קָם (וַ) va “and”וַיִּבְנוּ֙ (וַ) va “and”וַֽיַּעֲמִ֖ידוּ (וַֽ) va “and”

And the fish-gate did the sons of Senaah build: they laid its beams, and set up its doors, its locks and its bars.

וַֽיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ (וַֽ) va “and”

And the gate of the old [ergänzt: wall] repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodiah; they laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its locks, and its bars.

וַֽיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ (וַֽ) va “and”

Next to them repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths; and next to him repaired Hananiah of the perfumers, and they left Jerusalem [ergänzt: in its state] as far as the broad wall.

וַיַּֽעַזְבוּ֙ (וַ) va “and”

The valley-gate repaired Hanun, and the inhabitants of Zanoah; they built it, and set up its doors, its locks and its bars, and a thousand cubits of the wall as far as the dung-gate.

וַֽיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ (וַֽ) va “and”

And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, a second piece over against the going up to the armoury at the angle.

וַיְחַזֵּ֨ק (וַ) va “and”

And it came to pass that when Sanballat heard that we built the wall, he was angry and very indignant, and mocked the Jews.

וַיְהִ֞י (וַ) va. “and”וַיִּ֣חַר (וַ) va “and”וַיִּכְעַ֖ס (וַ) va “and”וַיַּלְעֵ֖ג (וַ) va “and”

And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? shall they be permitted to go on? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, when they are burned?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (וַ) va “and”וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (וַ) va “and”

And Tobijah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox went up, it would break down their stone wall. --

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (וַ) va “and”וּפָרַ֖ץ (וּ) u. “and”

But we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to the half thereof; for the people had a mind to work.

וַנִּבְנֶה֙ (וַ) va. “and”וַתִּקָּשֵׁ֥ר (וַ) va. “and”וַיְהִ֧י (וַ) va “and”

And it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobijah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being repaired, that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

וַיְהִ֣י (וַ) va “and”וַיִּ֥חַר (וַ) va “and”

and conspired all of them together to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

וַיִּקְשְׁר֤וּ (וַ) va “and”

Then we prayed to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

וַנִּתְפַּלֵּ֖ל (וַ) va. “and”וַנַּעֲמִ֨יד (וַ) va. “and”

And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens faileth, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build at the wall.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (וַ) va “and”

And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come into the midst of them and kill them, and put an end to the work.

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (וַ) va “and”וַהֲרַגְנ֑וּם (וַ) va. “and”וְהִשְׁבַּ֖תְנוּ (וְ) ve. “and”

And it came to pass that when the Jews that dwelt by them came and told us so ten times, from all the places whence they returned to us,

וַֽיְהִי֙ (וַֽ) va “and”וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ (וַ) va “and”

I set in the lower places behind the wall in exposed places, I even set the people, according to their families, with their swords, their spears and their bows.

וָֽאַעֲמִ֞יד (וָֽ) va. “and”וָֽאַעֲמִ֤יד (וָֽ) va. “and”

And I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember the Lord who is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.

וָאֵ֣רֶא (וָ) va. “and”וָאָק֗וּם (וָ) va. “and”וָאֹמַ֞ר (וָ) va. “and”

And it came to pass that when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that God had defeated their counsel, we returned all of us to the wall, every one to his work.

וַיְהִ֞י (וַ) va “and”וַיָּ֥פֶר (וַ) va “and”וַנָּ֤שָׁב (וַ) va. “and”

And from that time forth the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held the spears, and the shields, and the bows, and the corslets; and the captains were behind all the house of Judah.
