Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Can a land be made to bring forth in one day? shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her sons.

הֲי֤וּחַל (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith Jehovah; I who cause to bring forth, shall I shut [supplied: the womb]? saith thy God.

הַאֲנִ֥י (הַ) ha. “¿”

Hath a nation changed [supplied: its] gods? and they are no gods; -- but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

הַהֵימִ֥יר (הַ) ha. “¿”

Is Israel a bondman? Is he a home-born [supplied: slave]? Why is he become a spoil?

הַעֶ֙בֶד֙ (הַ) ha. “¿”

Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, at the time he was leading thee in the way?

הֲלוֹא־ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

O generation, mark ye the word of Jehovah. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Wherefore say my people, We have dominion; we will come no more unto thee?

הֲמִדְבָּ֤ר (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Doth a virgin forget her ornaments, a bride her attire? But my people have forgotten me days without number.

הֲתִשְׁכַּ֤ח (הֲ) ha. “¿”

They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? Would not that land be utterly polluted? But thou hast committed fornication with many lovers; yet return to me, saith Jehovah.

הֲיָשׁ֤וּב (הֲ) ha. “¿”הֲל֛וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?

הֲל֣וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Will he keep [supplied: his anger] for ever? Will he preserve it perpetually? Behold, thou hast spoken and hast done evil things, and thou art [supplied: so] determined.

הֲיִנְטֹ֣ר (הֲ) ha. “¿”

And Jehovah said unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen what backsliding Israel hath done? She hath gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath committed fornication.

הֲֽרָאִ֔יתָ (הֲֽ) ha “¿”

Jehovah, are not thine eyes upon fidelity? Thou hast smitten them, but they are not sore; thou hast consumed them, they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

הֲל֣וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah, and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

הַֽעַל־ (הַֽ) ha. “¿”

Will ye not fear me? saith Jehovah. Will ye not tremble at my presence, who have set the sand a bound for the sea by a perpetual decree, and it shall not pass it? and its waves toss themselves, but they do not prevail; and they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

הַאוֹתִ֨י (הַ) ha. “¿”

Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

הַֽעַל־ (הַֽ) ha. “¿”

What? steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not ...

הֲגָנֹ֤ב׀ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Is this house, which is called by my name, a den of robbers in your eyes? Even I, behold, I have seen it, saith Jehovah.

הַמְעָרַ֣ת (הַ) ha “¿”

Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

הַֽאֵינְךָ֣ (הַֽ) ha. “¿”

Is it I whom they provoke to anger? saith Jehovah; is it not themselves, to the shame of their own face?

הַאֹתִ֛י (הַ) ha. “¿”הֲל֣וֹא (הֲ) ha. “¿”

And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah: Do [supplied: men] fall, and not rise up? Doth one turn away, and not return?

הֲיִפְּל֖וּ (הֲ) ha. “¿”

Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people, from a very far country: Is not Jehovah in Zion? Is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, with foreign vanities?

הַֽיהוָה֙ (הַֽ) ha. “¿”

Is there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there? Why then is there no dressing applied for the healing of the daughter of my people?

הַצֳרִי֙ (הַ) ha. “¿”

Shall I not visit them for these [supplied: things]? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

הַעַל־ (הַ) ha. “¿”

My heritage is unto me [supplied: as] a speckled bird of prey; the birds of prey round about are against her. Go, assemble all the beasts of the field, bring them to devour.

הַעַ֨יִט (הַ) ha. “¿”הַעַ֖יִט (הַ) ha. “that”

And thou shalt speak unto them this word: Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Every skin shall be filled with wine. And they will say unto thee, Do we not very well know that every skin shall be filled with wine?
